Wood
carving is a form of working wood by means of
a cutting tool held in the hand, resulting in
a wooden figure or figurine or in the ornamentation
of a wooden object. Painstakingly carved and inlaid,
the wooden articles of Uttar Pradesh are quite
a rave with all lovers of wood carvings.
This group of 10 artisans belongs to a village
called Chhipiwara, Pilkhuwa. They were originally
making blocks for printing which became almost
a nascent industry. They were on the verge of
loosing their livelihood when some designers got
together to design products using their skills.
They work under the supervision of a master craftsman,
Abshar Husain, who is a national award winner
for his craft. He provides designs inputs which
the artisans convert into final products. The
wooden raw boxes are purchased from Saharanpur,
UP and the carving is done in Pilkhuwa using traditional
carving tools.
